How do you make city life more connected, more engaging and a little more spontaneous? As part of PLDI’s vision to improve everyday life in Port Louis and create better experiences for people across Mauritius, Chaké was conceived in one month — naming to launch, full scope, handled personally, start to finish.
The Challenge
Prior to Chaké, the local entertainment and event scene in Mauritius was highly fragmented, finding something to do meant scrolling through disconnected Facebook Events, tracking down individual Instagram pages, or relying on newspaper listings and word of mouth. As part of its vision to improve everyday life in Port Louis, PLDI wanted to give people across the country a better way to connect with the cultural life around them, from arts and culture to health, sports, entertainment and a wide range of events and experiences. The challenge went beyond fragmentation: in 2017, Mauritius wasn’t yet an app-download culture, and convincing people to adopt a new habit, downloading and regularly opening an app, was as much the task as building the app itself.
